How to price your floating stair

  1. 1
    Measure
The height from finished floor to finished floor, and the 4 measurements of the beam the stair bolts to at the top. Approximate numbers are fine for a price; the Measurements tab shows how to take them.
  2. 2
    Choose
Tread width and wood, the stringer and its color, and railings if you want them. A stair that turns: open Stairs with intermediate landings.

1. Floor-to-floor height

Enter feet and inches, like 4' 8 1/2", or inches only, like 56 1/2. Per code, 151" is the maximum rise permitted per flight. An approximate height is enough for pricing; the Measurements tab explains how to take the final height.
Receiving beam at the upper floor
The top of the stair bolts to this beam. All four are needed to price the stair: they decide whether it needs an extension tread.
Top to bottom of the joist or header the stair attaches to.
Its width, front to back.
The board on top of the beam.
Hardwood, tile and so on (0 if none).

2. Treads

Warm, light reddish-brown color with a bold, open grain. Hard and durable for everyday traffic (Janka hardness 1,290 lbf). Takes stain evenly.

3. Stringer material

4. Railings

Stair only. Railings are purchased from other sources.
